On a mailing list I'm on, we've gotten sidetracked onto discussing D&D. And one person posted this:

That reminds me of a MUCH scarier D&D concept.

I was in a small group in Frankfurt Germany. We were all bachelors except for one married couple, so we played at their place. One of out players got his half orc killed and we dutifully carted the body to the nearby temple to get him resurrected. The priest was apparently of the alignment Chaotic Insane. He cast the wrong spell and got reincarnate. The player now got to plea with the deity as to his reincarnated form. The Game Master (the husband) called in the deity. His three year old little girl.

"What do you want him brought back as, Honey?"

"A Bunny Rabbit!"

"Uhh, I can't fight monsters as a bunny. Can't I be a half orc again?"

"I don't LIKE half orcs. They're ugly and nasty."

"OOOKKK, how about a human?"

"Nope. I like Elves."

"But half orcs don't get along with elves."

"YOU'RE AN ELF! Can I go now, daddy?"

This is a tree near my place that I encountered while geocaching. It's almost 11 feet around (130") which means it's almost 42" across.

I had the shopping cart in the pics for scale. I'll need to go back and make some distant shots to try to get the whole thing in the picture.

I've been using the bike a lot (I'll eventually get some notes whipped into some backdated posts to cover some of that). Started out running errands, then it was geocaching.

Much geocaching stuff )

Last night [livejournal.com profile] fayanora and I aborted a try for more caches because her front bike tire was going flat. This was bad because it'd been filled up on the way over after having gone flat on her a few days before.

When we got home we watched cartoons and BSG episodes.

And tried to see what we could do about her tire. I fear attempts to fix a problem (the tubeless tire had "slipped" along the rim, making the valve stem stick out at an angle (not good for the stem or the "tube")) made things worse. It was flat when she went to leave.

Today, after finding The Whispering Winds cache, my back tire started losing air. I suspect I picked up a thorn or something. The dinky little pump I had along was useless (it was about 6" long and not very thick). Pumping helped a bit, but by the time I was about a mile and a quarter from home, I was afraid to ride the bike. By the time I got home it was utterly flat.

*sigh*. Can't afford repairs. Heck, I can't afford to renew my anti-virus stuff and I'm not sure about the Internet and storage for next month. Arrghhh.

The tree I posted images of earler? Some googling got a likely hit:

Oregon White Oak

Note only do the leaves look pretty close, but the range is right (heck, it's the *only* oak tree listed that has a range that is anywhere *near* here). And that tree has been there long enough (I'd guess) that it's likely native, not an import.
