I like the way they take notice of the fact that the tech level at which you can *discover* something is often a lot higher than the level required to *make* something.

As an example, electrical motors, the electric light and things like the telegraph (and even radio) are buildable with iron age tech. So the idea of preserving how to build things with the lowest tech possible/practical is a really good idea if you are going to accept the idea that civilization may fall from time to time.

The terrifying part is that apparently no alien civilizations that had previously encountered human society had any of their records survive the human collapses.
