kengr: (geocaching)
[personal profile] kengr
I've been using the bike a lot (I'll eventually get some notes whipped into some backdated posts to cover some of that). Started out running errands, then it was geocaching.

Yesterday I took Fay out since she had her bike. We looked for several caches:

  • GC1HRG1 Son of Earl
couldn't find it (I've looked several times)
  • GC1ERH8 the bucket list
This I didn't expect to find as several folks have reported signs it'd been taken. Sure enough, we didn't find it either. But I learned two things. First, I need to wear long pants if I'm hunting thru underbrush. Second, I need my walking stick for getting *down* slopes.
  • GCMBK2 Blaesing Field
We've looked for this before and never found it. A few comments in the description as well as comments in other people's logs made me think we'd been looking in the wrong spot. Still no joy. :-(
  • GC15G7X Dog chases Cat, Cat chases Mouse
This one is driving me nuts. It's in a park, and the two times I've looked, the GPS has given *very* different spots (like 50 feet apart). We didn't find it.
  • GC18D9T Isle Whir
This is the first cache I ever found. I hadn't even been looking, but when the GPS (which doubles as my bike computer) showed it nearby, I decided to look. And found it. So I figured it'd be a good one to let Fay try for. Sure enough, she found it.
  • GC1T4FE Island Trails #4: Portland Subud Center
We found the landmarks, but not the cache. And when I was checking this morning, I found that somebody had found it on their morning jog today. Guess we didn't look hard enough.
  • GCHB4T End of the Streetcar Line
I'd been to this one before as well (same day I found Island Whir), but not found anytghing. Duh. It's a virtual cache. This time I had the cheat sheet an we found it easily.

We had to cut things short because of bike problems (more on that in next post)

I looked for a bunch of caches today.

  • GC157PK Hangin At The Slough
I've been there several times before. Alas, it's virtually certain that the cache got lost or stolen, as *part* of the container is there, but nothing else. I checjk when I'm going by, just to see if it's been replaced yet.
  • GCMNN4 Stuck on U
I'd been there before, without cheat sheets for that cache. This time I was prepared (and wearing long pants and carrying my walking stick (which was fun to figure out how to carry on the bike)). Found it quickly. Re hid it.
  • GC1Q8A5 The Whispering Wind
I'd been here before as well and not found anything. As I left the sidewalk, I spotted another person with a GPS and led him to the general area the "easy" way. We searched for at least 15 minutes in the bushes before he spotted it. A very sneaky container indeed.
  • GC1Q88H The Gee "O" Spot
Another one I'd been too before. Wasted some time trying to see if another of the sprinkler related stuff was dummies. The guy from the last cache spotted the container. Another evil one.
  • GC1HEZ1 Benches Everywhere, Nowhere to Sit
This was my first time at this cache. But it *was* the next nearest to the last one. Again ran into the other cacher (who was from Tuscon, and just visiting). I found the right spot but missed the container (note to self, add gloves to caching kit). He rechecked and found it.
  • QC1Q898 A NEW HOME FOR SPOT
Another new to me cache. And this time *I* was the one to spot the container. Another of those evil ones. As I found out a bit ago, the guy who hid the three we found invented them and sells them. This was even though I arrived later than he did (I was on my bike and he was on foot. But I was having bike problems)
  • GC1HNN3 Cricket at the Hampton?
He was heading that way too, but my bike problems delayed me a lot. I didn't see him when I got there. This was my third try at this one, and once again, no joy.

Because of the bike problems I heading home and skipped making a third try at one cache on the way home. I did look casually for another that I had to walk the bike past, but it's almost certainly been muggled (stolen/destroyed by non-cachers)
