A former diplomat writes an op-ed piece on eliminating private gun ownership in the US.

Not only does his plan violate the Second Amendment, the searches and sweeps he *explicitly* sets forth as part of it violate most of the rest of the Bill of Rights.

And he doesn't see anything *wrong* with that!!!!!

How the HELL did someone like that get to be a diplomat?

On top of that, his plan wouldn't work anyway. Aside from all the legal problems, there's the simple fact that *no* government has ever suceeded in doing this sort of thing to an unwilling population.

What on earth is he *on*?!

My feelings on gun control are very mixed; I don't presume to have answers. I almost had myself a concealed carry permit, and weapon to carry, twenty-odd years ago while dealing with the stalker ex-fiance-from-hell; at the same time, I can see tightening regulations. But this? *shakes head*

because it often doesn't affect the "upper crust." Most federal politicians have armed protection; people with licenses to still have guns even after a ban. The rich and famous will be able to buy protection -- either my moving to a place that is well patrolled by police/guards, or by hiring off-duty officers to be bodyguards.
They could probably even get a lawyer to find some loophole to allow them to get the guns anyway.

a ban would only affect the law-abiding middle and lower classes. The criminals would be able to get guns, the rich would have access to people with guns, and everyone else would be at the mercy of both.
