Portland has all sorts of interesting folks. Back in the early 80s, I respomded to a request for someone to test a TRS-80 Model II version of a program someone had written.
Nice older lady. She'd written a combined program (think sort of like office, but lower tech). Editor, telecommunications, database, and a few other functions I don't recall.
She wrote it in assembler and for a 16k system. She had a model I I think and wanted to check the changes to make it run on a model III.
Turns out she'd been one of the chief programmers on the USAF SAGE system back in the 50s and 60s. She also wrote some SF as well. Sylvia Engdahl.
Anyway, she wrote this integrated environment stuff in assembler (or maybe even in machine code) simply because she wasn't impressed with what was available and for the heck of it. She sold copies (I don't recall how much). Somewhere I have a copy of the software that she gave my for testing out the Model III version.
