making progress
Aug. 24th, 2008 12:57 amWell, I've not only got a Kubuntu system running,. I've gotten myself out of trouble on my own.
The Adept installer had quit working (complaining about a database in use). A bit of googling and remembering to use "sudo" in front of a few commands and I had things going again. Including finishing the Sun Java install from the command line.
Now I'm working on getting flash to work in Firefox.

Date: 2008-08-24 08:23 pm (UTC)install the package 'flashplayer-nonfree' from the multiverse repositories. (Adept menu Adept -> manage repositories, check the multiverse checkbox.) I have download set to server for Finland in that dialog, so I don't know if that has an effect.
Firefoxes which use that package are both 'firefox' and 'firefox-2'. I use the version 2 at home and 3 at work, both seem to work.
The non-free Flash player seems to leak some memory, so it's not an ideal solution. Never found that to be trouble enough to try out the free versions, though.

Date: 2008-08-25 08:07 am (UTC)That gets you a "terminal session" (ie a command line window)
at the prompt type:
sudo dpkg --config -a
This will go thru a bunch of stuff, and produce some error messages.
Try it a couple of times until the messages don't change. Then copy those to the clipboard, and send them to me and I'll tell you the next step.
