good & bad
Jun. 19th, 2008 07:02 pmWell, the apartment was supposed to get inspected today. I hadn't been able to sleep so I wound up taking a nap from about 11 to 2. Either they looked in while I was sleeping or they postponed the inspection. <sigh>
On the plus side, I got things re-arranged to be better (in the long run).
Got a "desk" (two filing cabinets with a door blank for a top) set up in the bedroom. That required moving the pair of *big* speakers that Lin and Kermit gave me when they upgraded their s years back (maybe 5 years back?). And since I had to shift the stuff around my stereo and speakers in the living room, that meant I could swap them for my older speakers.
One of the old speakers had a torn cone on the bass element. So it's set aside to see if it can be fixed some day. That let me make the other one the center speaker. And while doing laundry the other day, I saw that someone had set out a couple of small "bookshelf" speakers on the "up for grabs" table in the rec room. I grabbed those and now that I have also found the speaker wire, I was able to set them up as the rear/surround speakers.
So I now have a full 5 channel setup. While the stereo could support a subwoofer, I'm not interested at the moment. Aside from money, subwoofers are *not* a good idea for folks on the second or higher floor of an apartment building. they tend to irritate the neighbors on the floor below. :-)
I've dug out the DVD config DVD that came as a free "extra with my first DVD player. Still going to be doing a bit of messing around shifting configs and trying sample stuff to show off what the system can do. Hadn't realized that my current DVD player supports DTS 5.1. My old one didn't.
While digging for the stereo manual to see how to tell it the extra speakers were there (and what size they were and where they were placed) I found the "manual" for the flat panel speakers I'm using with my monitor/TV combo. And discovered why I'd had no luck trying to find them online (they're quite good, and were cheap). Turns out they aren't Midland, they are Midiland. Midiland FP21 if any of you are looking.
So they are on the list of "stuff to get when I can spare cash for non-necessities".
Back on the bad side, I've got a headache. The folks in the apartment below are barbecueing on the lawn. Only they have the BBQ set up right under my window. So I get all the fumes from the (way too much) lighter fluid they used.
It's happened before so I went down to talk to them. Ran into the guy as he was heading back inside. I explained and asked him to place it somewhere different next time. Turns out there won't be a next time, as he's moving out.
Gotta post more stuff on ebay and hope it sells better than a couple of the current batches did.
