Supreme Court Tuesday struck down a 6-year-old law that prohibits the distribution and possession of virtual child pornography that appears to -- but does not -- depict real children.

I'm amazed that the current court actually ruled this way.

Makes me less worried about some things at least.

In this frenzied social atmosphere of "pedophile-mania" the court handed that ruling down?
That's like saying, "No, I don't believe there's an undercover communist agent on every street corner", in 1951!

I suppose the balloon had to lose at least a little air at some point. It's gone on for so long and picked up so much hysterical momentum it can't barrel along on in perpetuity.

Think: We live in an age where hardly anyone at all finds anything peculiar or questionable about the name of an online watchdog organization that calls itself, "Perverted Justice" and is joined by NBC's popular TV "news show" (?) "Dateline".

We don't live in a nation of great brains, do we?

Dateline has come *very* close to winding up in court over the tactics of the Perverted Justice folks. In at least one case the "sting" was ruled illegal and they barely escaped being arrested. And the folks they'd "stung" got released *because* they'd carried out the "sting" illegally and thus messed things up such that the authorities not only couldn't use the evidence but couldn't justify keeping an eye on the folks they'd targeted because even if they *were* guilty, they'd not be stupid enough to try anything again for a long time.

I'm reminded of the whole "Satanic Abuse" bit from the 80s.

The sad thing is, most child abuse is from parents, relatives, friends and "trusted adults" (priests, teachers, etc) not strangers. But that's not what the news makes a big deal about. So the public figures stranger abuse is the majority and the other stuff is uncommon.

I'm relieved to know that a TV network in the mad rush of the ratings war became so careless that they'd shot themselves in both feet by dashing ahead crazily enough that they ran afoul of the law by posturing as society's guardians solely for the bucks and self-aggrandizement.

The show was indeed misleading, as you point out, about those who perpetrates child abuse by casting strangers online and strangers from "out there, somewhere" as the common perpetrators, not those that kids trusts most.

I can only hope that obnoxious, entirely useless bastard, "Chris Hanson" has come to the end of his career as an in-the-flesh Dudley Dooright that no one ever takes seriously again. His performance was absolutely disgusting.

Wow, I thought Sandra Day O'Connor had retired? Apparently I was wrong. Thank God. USUALLY she's right on the money, although dissenting this time I think was erroneous.
