At least here in the US, I can think of Congress critters on both sides of the aisle who would use their clout to help the kid out. On the right, it would be to stick a thumb in Iran's eye. On the left, it would be to show what heartless bastards those on the right are for not helping the kid out.
Hell, the convicted felon from Massachusetts would probably do it just to screw with the INS. The INS still askes "how high" when he calls.
In the UK, there seems to be some odd idea in the government that if they give the extremist Islamic groups what they want, they will leave people outside their group alone.
