kengr: (seperation of church & hate)

Yesterday I was reading an editorial against the attempt to ban same sex marriages in Arizona. And the writer (a conservative) raised a point about using the Bible to justify banning same sex marriages.

He pointed out that the Bible *far* more clearly bans divorce. Yet that's legal.

This makes an *excellent* way to chop most of the Bible-thumpers off at the knees.

If they claim the US is based on Christian principles, ask why they aren't lobbying to make divorce illegal (again).

If they claim homosexuality is sinful or contrary to the Bible, again, point out the so is divorce.

And so on. The *only* argument they can make is that "homosexuality is worse". At which point you haul out the numbers. How many divorces a year?(use published figures) How many gays in the US (be sure to use *their* numbers for the number of gays)

And a truly trivial bit of math will show that divorce is a far larger problem.

They'll still argue. But you'll have either made them come out strongly against divorce (which will alienate a large chunk of their support) or made them look silly (which will at least erodes *some* of it)

If they claim to be christian, a more effective tactic is to point out that most of Jesus's preaching was about caring for the poor, and asking them how many poor people they, personally, have fed.

Most people claiming christian values are doing so as a cover for personal greed, and are the furthest thing from following the actual values of Jesus of anyone in our society.

best,

Joel
