I'm sure some parents were upset. But I'm sorry, my sex ed classes at that same age did have drawings of both male and female genitalia. Having students make some is different, but it'd be a very good way to see what they do and don't know.
And why on earth is the opinion of a *fourth* grader relevant to a *seventh* grade class?
In any case a *lot* depends on *how* this was done. Which the story says absilutely *nothing* about. No, it's all about how seventh graders can't be allowed to do this or be exposed to this. Bullshit.
