Yes, I have once again been reading along in a story only to have the (obviously male) writer refer to a female character's Adam's apple.

Hate to break it to you, guys, but that's an exclusively *male* bit of equipment. When testosterone causes your voice to change at puberty, it does so by enlarging the larynx. And that enlargement shows on the outside as the Adam's apple.

This does not happen to females unless they get administered large doses of testosterone. And when they do, their voices change, and they get other male charactertistics, such as all that hair.

what do you call a visible "adam's apple"-like thing when seen on a woman?

Giving writers -- male and female -- an alternative term might help :-).

Actually I have known several born women with adam's apple - and I just wanted to double check - more information at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam's_apple - it is just more prominent in males... and not very common in women but can and does occure.
