Book review
Sep. 22nd, 2006 07:41 amI have just completed the new Heinlein (and Robinson) book Variable Star.
You need to read it. Really.
It's definitely got the Heinlein touches, but it also has Spider's definite touch in many places.
It's obviously set in a variant of Heinlein's "Future History" timeline. With a few bits "borrowed" from other Heinlein stories.
I'm not going to spoil the plot. But I will make a few semi-spoilers about some things below the cut.
Spider "snuck in" a few characters. Solomon Short, for one. And a Survivor by the name of Gerald Knave. :-)
A few minor characters have names obviously based on fellow SF writers and the like.
There may be others I missed. In the Afterword, he mentions a person who was of great help with things and who just *happens* to have the same name as an important character. Then again, given *who* said person is, it's rather fitting.
