Mixed feelings...

I've got mixed feelings about this. I actually think that small towns or enclaves of some sort in larger towns where folks can have variant rules could be a good thing.
But I'd also want them to be more voluntary than this seems to be. And, of course, there's always the matter of spouses and children who may nmot want to live under those rules.
More telling, is considering the likely reaction if people tried this with Wicca, or some other "not mainstream" faith or subculture.

Date: 2006-03-02 03:12 pm (UTC)Ha ha! True libertarians ought to be looking closely at this to see how they can start a libertarian town! :-)
Anyway, I don't see how this is at all involuntary. Nobody would be forcing you to live there, and even then, it's the fact that he will own all the commercial property that gives him the right to put restrictions in the leases as to what they will sell. That doesn't mean you couldn't view porn at home or something. And most Christians do just that! ;-)

Recipe: Take one small state with a political culture already geared toward protecting individual liberty, add 20,000 committed libertarians, and stir (gently or vigorously, depending on the need at the time).

Date: 2006-03-03 12:25 am (UTC)But in case you hadn't noticed, the FSP is failing to gain the number of residents it originally stated was needed. In addition, there are several thousands people moving to NH from nearby states each year, which means we would need even *more* than the originally predicted 20,000.
I think a better solution is to simply buy some land and sell or rent homes and businesses. Unfortunately, we don't seem to have many millionaires in our ranks.
