What's scary is that the effects for the Star Wars film are *better* than the ones in the original Star Wars! At least judging by the trailer & teaser.

Yeah.. it only took 28 years for a $1000 pc and $1500 in software to beat a multimillion dollar state of the art ( hell, they created most of the curent art ) facility.. :)

What's more impressive is that just 10 years ago, the effects on Babylon 5 were state of the art... I have more processing power in one, mid-level workstation than the entire 2nd season render farm at Netter Digital.

I still recall my shock when in the course of an argument with someone I dug out the hardware ref manual for the old mainframe I'd learned assembler on (at a community college) in 1974. And discovered that my "notebook" (TRS-80 Model 100) had *more* memory. And I suspect it was faster as well. And that was maybe 20 years diff (given that the mainframe was probably miod 60s vintage and the M100 was mid 80s).

The hard drive on a stock IBM XT holds twice the data that a disk pack for an IBM 360 did. And 2 gig Jaz disk holds over 400 times as much.

It's scary.
