buses and distancing
Apr. 5th, 2020 12:26 pmI had occasion to take the bus yesterday. Tri-Met is doing things *right*.
They've reduced the schedule becuase of the lowered ridership, but did it sensibly.
Weekday buses are now running on the Saturday schedules, with added early and late trips. Weekend buses are running on the Sunday schedule.
they are no longer taking cash or bus tickets. Instead they are only using the HOP cards. and if you don't have one, they'll mail you one for free (you still have to put money on it).
They'd been working towards eliminating the tickets anyway, but this was a good time to push forward. When the stay-at-home bit is over, they'll probably go back to accepting cash.
But for now, you don't have to touch anything. You just put the card against the scanner and it reads the info.
They're also restricting the number of people per bus. They're doing that by zip-tieing signs to most of the seats that say "don't sit in this seat. They're spaced to maintain social distancing. Like this (x marks seats you don't sit in):
[x][ ] [x][ ]
[x][x] [x][x]
[ ][x] [x][ ]
and so on down the rows.
Also you have to leave by the rear doors if you are able to.
All pretty sensible.
Of course, I'm sure *some* people are having fits, like one of my neighbors who refused to get a HOP card before because they're a plot to track us all...
