Dec. 23rd, 2008

Last night the last package (that I know of) heading my way got scanned in at UPS here in Portland. Still had a delivery date (revised) of the 23rd (today).

That was where it sat at noon. About 1:30, it changed to "exception" and "ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS".

Said update had been entered in their system at 8am. Oy. Lets hear it for timely updates there folks.

That did mean that I could try for a couple of freecycle items. Haven't heard back on one (a bunch of Christmas CDs) but the other, some tins of flavored cocoa got back to me.

She'd offered for folks in *walking* distance of her, since she didn't think folks should be driving in this. I ewas only 20 blocks away and said that I could probably do it on my bike.

Well, on the main streets (I live on one, thank $deities_of_your_choice) it wasn't that bad as long as you stayed on the well-packed and even clear spots (thankfully I have *wide* tires). I did have to pull over every once in a while to let cars get by.

Some idiots tried going around which *I* wouldn't have given the distance between them and oncoming cars.

At 82nd, I tried riding up the hill but gave it up after a block. Too slow and too much work. So I walked the two blocks to Sandy, then a block *back" to 81st. It wasn't packed well enough on 81st to ride, so I walked the bike up the ruts. Got to the house and picked up the tins. Smaller than I'd expected, these are the "size of a small can of spices" type.

I did get on the bike to go back down 81st to Sandy. Couldn't pedal, but I could push with one foot (being downhill made it simpler). That way I was never going fast enough to get in trouble when the front tire would turn a bit and start snowplowing (damned soft spots).

And I just cut across Sandy when there was a big enough gap in traffic (had to wave one driver on when he stopped for me. I'd have run right into oncoming traffic going the other way if I'd tried then. :-)

Bit more fun going the few blocks back to Prescott. And getting home from there.

The trip took little enough time that the casserole I had left cooling on the stove was still a nice temp and the baking dish I had soaking was still in fairly hot water.

I do need to do more riding though as my heart rate was way too high.

I wrote this up as an email to a friend because the weather hasn't let her drop by to talk about the ideas.

This is the result of *years* of on and off thinking about the sort of house I'd like. Not that I could ever afford it....

Be warned, this rambles.
