kengr: (I'm one of them)

Seems that the Social Security Administration has decided that it won't accept *any* marriage licenses issued here during the period when Multnomah county was issuing same sex licenses.

So even straight couples married then are being rejected. They are doing the same for other jurisdictions that issued such licenses.

But (according to the news) they *are* accepting civil union papers from Vermont and same sex licenses from Massachusetts.

They claim that there are questions regarding the legality of the marriages they are rejecting.

Given that I see *no* way the courts are going to make a ruling the invalidates the opposite sex marriages at any of these locations, I think the SSA is either being excessively bureaucratic, or (more likely in my opinion) they are being used as a way to send a message about the administration's attitudes towards anyplace that tries to rock the boat.

I *hope* that this will lead to some nasty lawsuits. and that the SSA will get slammed hard. But I'm not going to hold my breath.
