For a story idea I have I need to know what you call someone who helps a disabled person. Specifically one who doesn't have hand (and can't have prosthetics for story reasons).

I know they'd be an aide, but what *kind* of aide?

Hmmmm... Animals which help the disabled are called support animals, but I don't think that would be a polite use for a human. Aide is all I can currently think of. Let me check my thesaurus... (While I'm thinking of it, what's another word for thesaurus? Yeah sorry; I'm in a bit of a silly mood this morning.;-)

Assistant. Supporter. (There it is again.)

I like "supporter" since such people would sometimes have to literally support the person they're helping. Just don't know whether it would be polite.
