Looking for D&D spell
Dec. 28th, 2015 02:57 pmI'm looking for the specs on an old D&D spell. I was able to check my set of original D&D books, and it wasn't in any of those, so it's probably from AD&D first edition. But those books are pretty buried.
Anyway, it was a moderately high level spell, and let the caster summon(?) an extradimensional 10x10 room. I think he had to cast it on a doorway or other opening which became the door to the room.
At higher levels he got bigger rooms.
He could put stuff in it, and it'd be there when he opened a door to the room again.
Anyway, if it sounds familiar to anyone, I'd like the spell name and any other info you can dig up including verbal somatic and material components if any as well as the restrictions.
Thanks in advance.
It'll help with a story idea.

Date: 2015-12-29 06:15 am (UTC)Leomund's Secure Shelter (4th level, Unearthed Arcana) is similar but exists in the regular world. Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion (7th, also Unearthed Arcana) is extra-dimensional but illusion based and doesn't let the magician store things for later. There's Rope Trick (2nd level, PHB) which gives an extra-dimensional hiding place but doesn't describe the space and explicitly won't let you store things for extended periods (and should probably be higher level than it is).
Illusionists get Shadow Door (5th level, PHB) which makes it look as if what you're describing is happening - in actuality the Illusionist is just running away invisibly. Druids get something like this in Plant Door (4th level: walk through live plants and stop inside if you want to; I guess a Druid could leave stuff inside a tree). It wouldn't have surprised me to discover it was a Cleric spell, but apparently not. It's also similar to the spell Sanctuary from GURPS (Grimoire, page 45).
Does any of that help?

Date: 2015-12-29 02:07 pm (UTC)Like Scott Sanford, I think that sounds familiar. I wonder if it was for original D&D but from a gaming magazine rather than the rule books. Or maybe an expansion module for the original books.
Been a long time since I looked at any of those original, little books. None of those I had were anywhere close to first edition so I gave most of them to a younger gamer who was interested and had never seen them.

Date: 2015-12-29 06:58 pm (UTC)Heck a few years back, someone online sent me a xerox of Warriors of Mars, so I have all the "original" materials. (anybody want the specs for a White ape? :-)
And I have the Dragon CD set which I haven't searched yet. Ditto for the original 3 volumes of the Arduin Grimoire (I don't think it's from there, and the lack of a table of contents makes searching them a royal pain).
Guess it's search the Dragon CDs (especially the issues of The Strategic Review). and then dig out the 1st ed AD&D rules.

My first paid writing was two or three small sidebars for very early issues of _Dragon_ magazine.

Date: 2015-12-30 12:16 am (UTC)D&D came later, and the first few printings had some monsters from Warriors of Mars on the wandering monster tables. I remember White Apes, and I think there was another but I'm too lazy to dig out the books.

Date: 2015-12-30 12:18 am (UTC)Don't think it was Arduin either. Never heard of Dragon Tree Spellbook. May have vaguely heard of Arcanum. Heard of Talislanta but we never used it.
