Last night I checked the weather forecast and found that today's high was going to be 98F. And Tomorrow (Monday) was projected for 100.

I made a store trip to get supoplies shortly after the store next door opened (6am). Around 8:30 I swiched from fans positioned to make the air flow in the livingroom window and out the bedroom window to setting up to use the air conditioner.

Turn off fan in bedroom doorway. Check
Move fan so door can be closed. check
turn off fan in bedroom window. check
leave bedroom and close door. check
close living room window. check
turn on air conditioner. check.

Note that for various historical reasons, I use the bedroom for storage and sleep in the living room.

So I took a nap with a fan blowing air from the air conditioner at me.

(makes note to replace pedestal fan that died)

Now I'm at the computer with that fan blowing the air at my chair. and making a list of things I forgot to put on the list for thios morning's trip to the store.

Being so close, I *can* get away with going there even in the hottest part of the day, but I'm not going to.

I went to the food bank today.

I just missed the bus I'd intended to take, and decided that I could walk the 12 blocks faster than waiting for the next bus (Mistake #1).

I was actually only half a block from the stop when the bus went by. Not bad, considering all the pauses to rest I'd made.

I'd brought along my pulse-oximeter so I could check my heart rate and oxygen levels. Good idea. I mostly kept it below 140 except when thing fell apart (later)

I walked the 3-4 blocks from the stop to the food bank without too much trouble. Though I still had to rest a few times.

Finally got there and while there were cars lined up for blocks, there was only one person ahead of me on foot. Which is good because they take the one foot people in a seperate queue from the cars.

After a bit, I got called up. two boxes of stuff, and three packages of frozen stuff (a huge thing of frozen chicken patties and another huge thing of frozen, cooked chicken chunks (like for fajitas), and a "small" bag of frozen pollock). And then I made the second mistake. They offered me this large box of milk (at a guess it had several gallons inside. The mistake was that I took it, even though I still had milk at home.

Then I made my third mistake. I didn't go thru the boxes and thing things out (there were indeed things I could have given back) so not only was I overloaded, the load was pretty awkward, ever with the folding grocery cart.

I struggled to haul it along (there's no sidewalk) and about halfway back to the bus stop a wheel broke. I struggled along a bit longer (basically 10-20m stop and rest, repeat). I finally gave up and called a cab. Took me three tries to get the number right.

The heat was getting to me (more than I realized until I got home). Finally the cab showed up. At the wrong spot, but within sight. a guy that had offered to help me managed to get the can driver directed to me.

I had to load everything myself. Ugh. Fortunately it only cost $7.

I had to unload stuff myself too. I was making the second trip back to the cab, to find that he'd unloaded the last two things and was leaving.

I was not doing well, but managed to get everything inside and then struggled upstairs to my apartment and sat there for a while waiting for my heart rate to drop. Sometime in all this, my heart rate hit 160 at one point. :-(

Finally grabbed the electronic thermometer, suck it in my ear and discovered my temp was 102. Eeep. Between the air conditioning and fluids it came down.

I made several trips with *light* loads after it got lower (but still not back to normal). Well spaced trips. It took me over 2 hours to get everything upstairs and the stuff that needed to go in the fridge put away.

Other stuff can wait. I'm now at the point I can lay down with a fan blowing on me.

I'll worry about replacing the cart and putting the rest of the stuff away later.

I've now added the thermometer to the things I'm gonna carry when out in the heat.

The other day I *finally* found my dust masks.

I knew I had some, and I even recalled seeing them while re-arranging things a few months back. I just couldn't remember where.

I finally realized that they were likely at the back of the cabinet I keep all my medical stuff in (which I have way too much of). I had one unopened pack of five andf a opened one that had one left. Great!

So Yesterday, I put on the one from the opened package and tried to form it around my nose. Didn't seem to be working. and some felt strange. So I took it off and looked.

There was a *hole( where I'd been trying to adjust it. sort of a T-shaped rip. I poked at it in another spot and my finger went through. a few tugs and I had pieces of mask in my hands.

It was stronger than wet toilet paper, but not by much.

Gee, I guess that one had expired,,,

The ones in the unopened package are fine.

I had occasion to take the bus yesterday. Tri-Met is doing things *right*.

They've reduced the schedule becuase of the lowered ridership, but did it sensibly.

Weekday buses are now running on the Saturday schedules, with added early and late trips. Weekend buses are running on the Sunday schedule.

they are no longer taking cash or bus tickets. Instead they are only using the HOP cards. and if you don't have one, they'll mail you one for free (you still have to put money on it).

They'd been working towards eliminating the tickets anyway, but this was a good time to push forward. When the stay-at-home bit is over, they'll probably go back to accepting cash.

But for now, you don't have to touch anything. You just put the card against the scanner and it reads the info.

They're also restricting the number of people per bus. They're doing that by zip-tieing signs to most of the seats that say "don't sit in this seat. They're spaced to maintain social distancing. Like this (x marks seats you don't sit in):

[x][ ] [x][ ]
[x][x] [x][x]
[ ][x] [x][ ]

and so on down the rows.

Also you have to leave by the rear doors if you are able to.

All pretty sensible.

Of course, I'm sure *some* people are having fits, like one of my neighbors who refused to get a HOP card before because they're a plot to track us all...

On Monday Fay and I went to the county courthouse to be witnesses for an acquaintance, Someone else wew knew (and dislike) was trying to get a restraining order against them, claing there were threats. Said person has done this several times before to other people in the building, but we hadn't heard about those cases when they were happening.

Anyway, We all had to show up, only to have the case postponed, partly because of the COVID precautions. Seems silly as it cost the pne person a day of work, and the other p[arty wanted a postponement anyway. *sigh*

We were able to grab some sandwiches afterwards, and after talking a bit we went home.

It was odd seiing the streets so deserted and having less than a dozen folks on the bus during rush hour. Since it was on the way and I had a craving, I stoped at Voodoo Donuts. They were open, but all the tables were gone (part of the "take-out only" order).

When I go home I found a notice on the building door to the effect of "please don't have non-essential visitors".

Fay and I texted back and forth and decided our weekly TV night was "essential" (mostly to our sanity.

It's kinda funny, as except for me going to the fridge or bathroom, or Fay going back to my door to grab food or stuff she'd brought we pretty much maintain "social distancing" during TV night anyway!

Id *did* decide to start the night (last night BTW) with some "appropriate" music before the queued up programs...

I like using dried seaweed in my ramen and a few other things. But it's been months since I ran out because the store I used to buy it at is no longer a single bus trip away. They split the route about half a mile from it, so I have to wait and transfer. Yeah, I could maybe walk it, but no thanks.

Also, since the Winco we started going to a few months back doesn't have the Nong Shimh Neo Guri ramen (They do have the Shin Ramyun) I've needed to go there to get that too.

The store next to the apartment does have the Neo Guri, but at twice the price. Nope.

Anyway, I've been putting off a trip to stock up for some time, and last week [personal profile] fayanora suggested that we *both* make a trip to the *other* location of the store (Hong Phat) as it was bigger and more convenient for her.

So we did that yesterday. I managed to miss *two* busses due to one thing and another, and I still beat Fay.

It was fun looking at all the stuff available. I got my ramen, and some bean thread. I also picked up a package of rice noodles. Bright yellow ones. Fay recommended them.

There's lot of other stuff to consider in the future. One thing I considered was the KitKats, They had Kit Kats from Japan(?) Alas, we could figure out what flavors they were and at $4.95 a bag, I didn't feel like experimenting.

Definitely need to go back and explore the seafood section!

Unfortunately, the store felt rather hot to me. Which, looking back, is odd as Fay was still bundled up in her many layers of winter robes and things. I also was feeling kinda light headed. So I grabbed a cold can of Blood Orange juice drink and headed to the checkout.

We'd been planning to hit Fred Meyer's as well (I have a gift card) but I wasn't feeling up to it. We did really well on the buses, I was able to ride the 20 with way, (it showed up just as we got to the stop) and then when we got to 60th, the 71 was already there. The driver was nice enough to wait for me to cross the street. And in very short order I was home.

The juice helped (I drank it on the bus) and I was able to sit at the computer and work on the massive mess of files Yahoo put together for me. I'm gonna have to cut back on working on them though, as my clicking finger is very sore...

Broke the door latch on my microwave. So no using it until I can get it fixed. Replacing it is out of the question.. At least this should be too horribly expensive.

AC already?

today's high was forecast to be 85 or above, so I hooked up the AC. Fortunately didn't take much. Just sticking the adapter thingie in the window, attaching the hose to it (took a couple tries to get it to latch into place, and then attaching the hose to the unit itself.

Turned it on, and adjusted where it was pointing a bit and it's trying to cool things down.

Also had to turn off the window fan in the bedroom (which I use for storage) and close the door to it. Hopefully nothing will "melt" in there.

Some day, I may manage to afford a second air conditioner for the bedroom.

The other I got the first of two shots of the Shingrix vaccine. The pharmacy tech warned me it'd hurt.

actually wasn't all that bad. a dull ache in the muscle. I was ok for the first day. Did lie in bed and read a lot, but I've been doing that a lot lately.

Second day, I just lay in bed and couldn't get interested in reading., I was a;so pretty cold (it was down to 68 at the computer. So I killed the fan in the bedroom window and closed the door.

Things did (eventually warm up, but meanwhile I was just laying there and napping a lot.

Then it got too hot. (I can be cold laying in be, but if I pull a sheet over me I get too warm, bleah)

Almost though I was gonna throw up a couple times, but that's gone away. but I was pretty much useless alll day. I'm a little better this morning. May have to cancel TV night with [personal profile] fayanora.

I've checked several times and I'm not running a fever but if not for that I'd think I had the ful or something.

I hope I don't get thing when I get the second dose in a few months. Ick.

ps. When I'm feeling better I'll have to post about the dream with the rattlesnakes.

Wednesday morning, I was awaken abruptly by my right calf trying to kill me.

Ok, not really, but that's what the cramp felt like. Ouch.

Fortunately my current bed frame has a convenient 2x4 to jam my foot up against to fight cramps. So I got it somewhat under control and it faded.

Mind you, even now there's a slight twinge of soreness. But it's not even annoying.

Thursday while getting out of bed I figured out *why* my cramps tend to come as I'm waking up. I sleep on my side, so as I roll over to my back and on to the other side, I point my toes (so they are out of the way for the roll).

That pointing involves contracting the calf muscle, which triggers the cramp (note that jamming your foot up against something and pushing it to keep the muscle stretched is what works best to shorten and "minimize" the cramp, so this makes sense)

Ok, good to know but not likely to be a lot of help as it's something your body does pretty much automatically. And being half asleep means you're unlike to remember to be careful in time.

Tonight my leg attacked me again. Apparent my old Croc flip-flops have worn down enough that they no longer give as much support to my heel. This means that my heel is now *lower* than my toes. Which stretches the Achilles tendon. And after a few hours the tendon reacts by informing you that it doesn't *like* being stretched that much that often.

Oh well, they need replacing anyway and they have lasted for many years.

Since Fay was still sick, I'd told her I'd make a run out to her new place with some supplies.

she's also buying a used monitor from Doug, So I figured I'd haul that too.

I as a bit worried because my stomach was a bit iffy when I went to bed last night. But it was ok when I got up.

I got myself fed and medicated, then went to the Albertsons to get the stuff Fay needed (toilet paper and kleenex-like substance). Found a good deal on the TP. 12 pack of MD for $4.99.

She'd asked for Puffs tissues with lotion. Single box was $1.99. 4 pack was $5.99. I texted her and she was ok with the 12 pack and the 4 pack.

Then it was back to the apartment to load the folding cart for the trip. And to rest up a bit before leaving (yes, I'm that out of shape).

My comment on the "ripping people" one:
"I was just joking" is *never* a "real" response. It's an attempt to avoid admitting that you *were* picking on (bullying) someone. And indicates that you knew so at the time.

It ranks right up the with "apologies" along the lines of "I'm sorry that you took it that way"

So I set up the crockpot with the chicken for tomorrow. a whole chicken and a couple of thighs (I threw the thighs in because they were bone in and all the other chicken in the freezer was boneless).

So I'm congratulating myself on this and planning the rest of the stuff for tomorrow (stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy green beans, etc) as I check my blood sugar. It's only as I'm injecting myself that I realized I'd slipped up.

I was supposed to inject 4 units of insulin-R. Instead I injected 8. Big oops. So I made myself a PB & J sandwich with the very much *not* sugar-free mint jelly. (BTW, PB&J on rye is downright *odd* :-)

I'll just have to wait longer before doing my fasting levels in the morning.

Anyway, the chicken will do instead of a turkey, and the various fixings will be easy to make. and since it's only me, I'll have leftovers for a while. Chicken sandwiches aren't as good as turkey sandwiches, but they are good enough. :-)

While talking about a number of things with [personal profile] alatefeline last night a couple of things came up.

One was unconscious assumptions. The other was the old canard "it takes two to make a fight".

While reading this article, the two ideas bashed together in my head.

The problem with "it takes two to fight" is the horribly inaccurate assumption it makes about "male" interactions in childhood. Namely that the choice is "fight"/"don't fight".

In reality, the choice is "get beat up"/"try to protect yourself". so it's actually unconscious gaslighting.

I mentioned "male" above because in my experience, it's always the female authority figures spouting this nonsensical piece of "wisdom". I suspect that is because of the differences in "male" and "female" socialization. Boys are expected to have fights. girls are "trained" to attack in less physical ways.

Though come to think of it, "it takes to to have a fight" *should* be equally applicable (and wrong) to the social sniping among girls, which can get *really* nasty by high school.

"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names can never hurt me" is another horrible example of gaslighting kids and is another bit of "wisdom" that should be stomped on *hard*.

Name calling can do *more* damage than physical assault, Bruises, even broken bones heal a lot faster than the emotional damage those "harmless" words can inflict.

I know I'm far from the only person to have PTSD from *emotional* abuse.

I finally got around to checking for this year's Garritan Community Christmas album Sunday. Got it download and gave a quick listen. Then I moved it to the appropriate slot in the holdiday music directory.

This year I'm trying something different. I've imported the "Christmas" subdirectory into Media Monkey, and I'm trying to build a playlist from it.

The raw import data shows why I rarely noticed the "list" (mostly manual switching between directories) repeating itself. Individual songs that occurred in more than one album, yes. The list as a whole no,

Why? Try this on for size: over 1700 song, with a combined play time of more than 90 hours! That's over 12 gig of files.

I don't mind the list being that long. In fact being that long is handy for avoiding getting boring. :-)

My portable bluetooth beakers will play music (MP3 and WAV files only, so not all of the above will play on them) directly off a microSD card. So when I get things weeded out and arranged a bit, I can copy things to the card, and then just stick it in the speaker. Instant background music for the holiday season. And easy to store the rest of the time.

It's a bonus that the speaker remembers where it was when you paused it and resumes.

But some weeding is *definitely* needed. I'm only 50 songs in and I've heard the "nine inch noels" parody twice.

On the bus today, I was watching for my stop, and so I saw this young lady get on. While she was fumbling for enough change to pay her fare, I couldn't help but notice her first name blazoned across the back of the hoodie she was wearing (later, when she turned to walk down the aisle, I saw that the hoodie was for her high school swim team. Go her!)

As soon as I saw the name, I winced inside. Why? Her name is Alexa.

Knowing teenagers, I'm sure she's had to put up with more than a few stupid jokes.

And it's not as if her parents could have foreseen that her name would be a problem. And I'm sure the engineers tried to pick a less common name.

I went to the Hollywood Farmers Market because I needed some veggies and I had some Seniors Farm Direct Nutrition vouchers I needed to use before the 30th.

Nice program. If you fill out the card and send it in, they send you back 6 $4 vouchers (if they don't run out before they get to you) which are good at most farmer's markets and a lot of farm "stands". They have o be spent on locally grown farm products. And you don't get change back.

So I took the bus down (the buses match up really well for this particular trip. Only a few minutes wait between getting off the 71 and getting on the 12. And the 12 stops only a block away from the market so that's good too.

Last time I'd gone I was in a hurry and the first stand I hit had every thing I wanted (well, not everything, but I got enough stuff to make a decent load.

This time I looked over all the stalls before buying anything. A bunch of things I'd *loved* to have bought. Like lots of different kinds of mushrooms. One stall had the *huge* "cabbage mushroom that had to be a foot across and 8" tall. Next to it was a lion's mane mushroom about the size of a volleyball. Alas, the prices for those and all the other mushrooms I saw were in the $16-$20/lb range.

One of the common veggies was Romanesco broccoli. I like it but I'd rather have regular broccoli. In the end I used up the vouchers and a bit of my own money and got brussel sprouts, rainbow chard, onions and some yellow and purple carrots.

One nice thing that the vendors do is if you are using the vouchers, they'll let you grab an extra onion, tomato or whatever to make up the "change".

Having a nice load, and most of what I wanted (couldn't justify broccoli or potatoes, between the weight and the bulk) I headed home.

The stop for heading home is also only a (short!) block away. Caught one after only a few minutes. Alas, I *just* missed the connection to the 71. I texted to see how long to the next one, and decided not to wait the 22 minutes.

Not my best decision, but I was able to make it from Sandy to Fremont in about 15 miniutes and gratefully sank onto the bench there.

After getting off the 71, I was walking along next to the Albertson's parking lot, and I saw a monitor or TV laying face down on the bark dust. There wasn't any visible damage, so I dragged it home.

I left it at the foot of the stairs and after resting a few minutes went back and hauled it up.

I let it sit because it'd likely been rained on or at least had dew and stuff.

A little while ago, I couldn't resist the temptation. I plugged it in and hit the on button. Nothing. Drat.

I tried again, holding the button down longer. This time it lt up!

There's some "funny looking" patches on the screen, but I think they may just be where some liquid got in and dried between the actual display panel and the faceplate.

This is a great find. I'll have to open it up and see if the weird stuff is something I can actually clean as oppssed to being actual damage to the display.

Even if the display *is* damaged, it'd be watchable in a pinch. Which would give me a spare for my TV.

And if it is something I can clean up, it's actually *bigger than my current TV (a 37", this is a 39 inch).

It's got 4 HDMI connectors, but only one set of AV connectors. It does have a VGA connector and a PC audio input jack.

Musing...

Fay and I *intended* to get there before Pride opened at noon. Best laid plans and all that, I overslept and was awakened by Fay texting (for the third time)me sometime after noon.

Since we were running late I decided not top go with the outfit I'd picked that night before (a purple satin blouse and a satin skirt in shades of orange and brown). At least in part because there wasn't time to shave and I didn't really want to do genderfuck.

Probably just as well, I sweated buckets in the slacks and t-shirt I went with instead. I might have ruined the other outfit.

We spent something like 5 hours going thru the booths. I think this is the first time I didn't run into anybody I knew there.

We did take a couple of breaks to sit down, but all that walking got to me. We did pick up some nice swag, including some tote bags and a pouch with a net lanyard that fits my cell phone.

Also got some cards for places we couldn't afford to buy stuff from.

And I saw fay drooling over this book on smutty sign language at one booth and bought it for her as an early birthday present (her birthday is in a couple of weeks). I also got myself a dirty coloring book. :-)

Glad I went, but really sore in lots of places from all that time on my feet.

Finally got it assembled and bedding etc transferred.

It's a royal pain trying to get screws thru the holes in the uprights and into the holes in the six foot long 2x4s that are the sides of the bunks. At least it is of you are doing it by yourself.

Worst thing was that once I got started I didn't have anyplace to lie down to rest. And since I get tired easily these days that just made things harder.

I definitely need to see about getting a decent twin mattress because the folded over double futon is *way* thick and will have me perching a lot higher off the ground than I expected.
