I've got a friend with IBS. Sghe has so far discovered that she can't have anything spicy, can't have diary, and can't have anything in the onion/garlic familiy or the family that includes bell peppers and stuff like jalsapenos.

She needs suggestions for stuff she can get or make cheap. And given the way she reacts to the current hot spell, minimal cooking is good.

Give her a hug for me. I recently had an Irritable Bowel attack which was triggered by a course of antibiotics.

In my case the worst food trigger is peanuts, including peanut butter and anything cooked in peanut oil.

You can substitute asafoetida for onion - it's usually available from Indian or Asian groceries.

Also, a lot of people with IBS find they can tolerate garlic-infused oil, so your friend might be able to buy/make some and still get the taste.

I can have hummus, apparently, even though there's a little garlic in it. Either I was wrong about garlic, or something in the hummus counteracts the effect.

Asafoetida? My only awareness of asafoetida is from one of my books on paganism. Burning asafoetida is used to get rid of ghosts and other spirits, but it's like the nuclear bomb of spirit-repellents, and should only be used in major hauntings, because it stinks so bad.
