ysabetwordsmith didn't have this video on her LJ, but a week or so ago she had a post about the crappiness of "female armor." I told her about how Lyria's soldiers have adamantium armor that is essentially all identical outwardly, regardless of gender (and her army is about 50/50 male/female), so that it's hard to tell the men from the women when they have the helmets on. Which is mainly because the armor she makes for them covers every available milimeter, the helmet leaving only small slits for the eyes and the mouth, so they can see and breathe.
As to herself, Lyria wears armor of living metal under her dress; this living metal is almost as strong as adamantium, and much more flexible. The same living metal is used for parts of the soldier armor as well, parts like the joints (so arrows can't get in at the joints) and the entire gauntlet is made of the living metal as well, to allow for virtually unimpeded use of the hand.
If you want an example of how practical armor can look sexy on a woman, check out the Iron Maiden from _T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents_. I think it was Wally Wood who came up with the design. Even in the modern revival (on comic stands now) it looks protective while presenting female curves.
No idea if such a suit would actually be practical to move around in, but it looks functional.
