Lin called about an hour ago. We were talking and stuff was going fine. Then I went to tell her about an event a local group we belong to was having. And she suddenly couldn't seem to understand anything I was saying. After the third try to get the info (when & where, basicly) across to her, I blew up.
I can only hold the phone handset so close to my mouth and stil be *able* to hold it for more than a few minute (I had a nice hedset, but the mike on the damned thing died without warning a while back).
And it's not as if she hadn't been able to understand other stuff that should have been harder to puzzle out.
I can only repeat the same damned thing so many times before it gets insanely annoying. And basicly not worth the hassle.
So I wound up letting the handset sit in my lap for aminute or to beforee I picked it up again.
Silence.
I went "Hello? Are you there". I got a "yes, I'm here".
So I waited for her to say something. After a bit she said something like "are *you* there?". I answered "yes". And there it sat until she had a call (probably Kermit) on the other line. So we said goodbye.
What irritates me the most is that I've heard her complain about Kermit reacting the same way I did. And she just can't seem to grasp the idea that if something is a casual comment, asking someone to repeat it over and over again is just going to kill the conversation.
Heck, unless it's a matter of "life and death" it's just not worth the aggravation.
But I'm sure she thinks I was being a jerk. :-(

Date: 2003-11-24 02:47 am (UTC)I don't like asking people to repeate themselves probably as much as they enjoy repeating themleves. But if I don't, then I don't get to hear half the conversation.
Damn concerts...
