kengr: (geocaching)

I decided to head out Tuesday evening and try once again to find the second cache I ever looked for.

This makes about a dozen attempts.

Wonder of wonders, I found it. And the GPS said there was another only 0.42 miles away.

GCMBK2 Blaesing Field
as I noted, this was the second cache I'd ever looked for. And one I'd looked for many times. This time I found it. And I'd swear I found it In a spot I'd looked before (several times). Given that it's an ammo box (think "twice the size of a kids lunch box) this is not exactly something you easily miss.

But find it, I did.

I'd made another checked of an almost certainly muggled cache on the way over.

GC1ERH8 The Bucket List
There's an obvious hole in the ground at a spot that fits the description, clues and co-ordinates. And nobody has found it since March...

So, on to that "nearby" cache.

GC14DTB Rocky Balboa's climb to the finish
A semi-hidden stairway down the hill.

This one appears to be MIA. The area where it is supposed to be has been subjected to extreme landscaping. Bare dirt couldn't hide a cache the size that's supposed to be there. And nobody has found it since early June. Oops.

But there was a cluster of three more caches not all that far away. So I headed for the next nearest.

GC1EEPE UK kingdom island
Aha. A small, round traffic island seemed to be the target... Oops. No cheat sheet for this one. But after a few minutes searchimng I found the cache in a spot I'd not have expected there to be room.

A short walk (a few blocks) got me close to another.

GC1FP1B The I.V.
Another where I didn't have the cheat sheet as I hadn't expected to be there.

Couldn't find anything likely, though after checking the info after returning home, I think I found the spot it used to hide in. And several folks have reported it as missing.

By now it was starting to get dark. Not dark dark, just dim enough that I had to turn on the backlight on the GPS. Off to the third in the cluster. This was one Fay and I had made a halfhearted search for without a cheat sheet months back.

GC1153C Alameda Isle

Another traffic island, only this one was triangular and larger. Having found Isle Whir this one was a fairly easy find. Collected a geocoin that's going to go up to Washington when my (now delayed) visit with Lin & Kermit happens.

Walked over to Fremont and noticed I wasn't too far from a cache fay and I had looked for but not found. I did have the cheat sheet for this one, and knowing that it was "one of those annoying magnetic nano-caches" gave me a better idea of just what I was looking for (having found one with Fay last week)

I made a minor goof and turned to wrong way on Fremont, adding several blocks to the way. Definitely dark by then.

GC15G7X Dog chases Cat, Cat chases Mouse

I thoroughly searched to location. Even used a flashlight. No joy. I reported it as possibly missing and I see that someone else has chimed in the same.

Walked home (a fairly straight shot up Skidmore). Legs were a bit sore by the time I got home, but not hotrrible.

I'd started at a bit after 7pm and got home around 9:30. And covered around 5 miles (instead of the mile or so and two cache visits I'd planned on).

Wednesday afternoon, I had to run an errand on the bus. So I checked to see what caches where in the area I'd wind up.

Accidentally got two caches confused and went past the one I'd intended to hit first. So I hit the one near the Hollywood Theater first.

GC1TZD0 Neighborhood Pride 1: Hollywood
The fact that they mention in the description that the container is wrapped in light green duct tape which "blends surprisingly well with the building" threw me off. As my GPS tends to "bounce" it's not always good for anything closer than 20 feet or so on some caches. So I wasted a lot of time searching the wrong part of the building. Finally found the cache. And they were right. It *does* blend in way too well. :-)

From there, it was a walk of a few blocks to the one I'd intended to hit first. Oops, Dollar Tree store... I'll just take a quick look...
I escaped with a few purchases (and actually stuff I needed, like more shampoo and body wash)

GC1T8K2 Mystery of The Rose City Church
This one took me longer than it should have. And when I realized the "so obvious it's invisible" clue, I had the cache (a tine the size of an Altoids box) in seconds. But I'd walked past it several times.

Finally, the third cache.

GC1A7E1 The Wall Stands Alone...
This one was interesting. Several misleading "could the cache be there?" spots. Then I spotted something larger and that on reflection, didn't fit.

Yep, that was the cache. Got it open and signed the log.

Instead of taking the Max, I took the 77. Less crowded and either way I'd transfer to the 71.

While waiting ( resisted the temptation to go looking for another cache that was only a block and a half away (good thing as it was a puzzle cache!) I got a call from Chrissy about my bike tire.

Due to the distraction from that, I saw a bus coming and got on. Only to realize a bit late it was the wrong bus. Woumnd up halfway back to where I'd caught the 77.

So I walked over to Sandy and just missed a 12. Fortunately I still had time on my transfer. Finally got a 12 to 57th & Sandy and got on the 71 2 minutes before my transfer expired. :-)
