Oct. 21st, 2003 05:53 pmThis *sucks*.
The Florida legislature and Governor have denied a Florida woman the right to die. Her husband, in accordance with her wishes before hand, had asked doctors to remove a feeding tube. Her parents had blocked this. It'd gone all the way to the Supreme Court who decline to hear the case.
So the Governor asked the legislature to pass a bill giving him the authority to order the tube replaced.
I hope to hell that *this* DOES get to the Supreme Court and the legislature and governor get slapped down.

Date: 2003-10-21 06:21 pm (UTC)The husband who wants to kill her off is living with another woman, by whom he has a child, and was abusive to her while they were married. There is reason to believe that his abuse is a factor in her condition.
She is not on life support, she only has a feeding tube. Death by dehydration and starvation is hideous.
Yet another reason why I don't believe in the right of my family and doctors to kill me if I get too troublesome or expensive to keep. I could kiss Jeb Bush.

Date: 2003-10-21 06:36 pm (UTC)And the woman never stated specifically that she'd rather die, at least never in writing. It's just the "husband's" word on that. I put husband in quotes because he hasn't acted like a husband at all. He just wants the money he's going to get when she dies. Why can't he just divorce her to marry the woman he is living with and producing children with? Her parents love her and want to take care of her, but every time they've ever tried to get therapy or any kind of real medical help for her the "husband" has gotten restraining orders keeping them from even seeing their daughter.
So yeah, I agree with you. :-)
