Ok, for a female super(hero?) I'm messing around with, I'm wondering what sort of hat would hde a pair of fox-type ears without looking too weird or being too uncomfortable.

At least the tail hides well under a skirt. :-)

And if anybody is feeling artistic and wants to try drawing her, take a costume like the "classic" Supergirl outfit. Add a "mask" rather like Zorro uses (ie ties like a bandanna, covers the face down to the nose. Add the fox ears, tail and the costume should be in reds/browns that suggest a fox.

And yes, she has a cape. In spite of the examples from The Incredibles.

ETA: To clarify, the hat is for use in "civilian" clothes. She just needs something comfortable that goes with normal teenage clothes suitable for high school. Currently I'm leaning towards a Gatsby (aka "newsboy cap")

I've got one and properly sized it'd probably work ok. and being softer and looser than a baseball cap, (and having an elastic band)it'd be more comfortable I'd think. But that looseness also means that it's possible to have fun by twitching the ears under it.

But I'm open to other suggestions.

The ears are placed on "top" of the head (typical "cat girl" positioning) and are furry but match her hair (which is (gee) "fox fur brown/red). She has normal human ears as well.

With a costume like that, I'd be tempted to steal a name from Kurt Busiek's Astro City and call her the Flying Fox. For costume design, either I'd hide the ears, or I'd make the costume to fit over them so that they look fake. I'm assuming she's able to fly, though.

It really depends on her power set. If there's a decent theme to build around, the hat may rise naturally from that.

Oh dear. There's already a character named Flying Fox? Drat.

The ear hiding bit is for when in "don't freak the mundanes" mode at Whateley Academy

They aren't real, just "attached" (and moved) via the same TK(?) "field" that lets her fly, be super strong and more or less invulnerable. Ditto for the tail.

She added them partly as a joke (her costume started out as a Halloween costume) and partly so that if necessary, she can dump them and hide in plain sight in her civvies.

Since they move as if they were real (took some practice, but she's got a talent for doing that to stuff in contact with her bod) and "pulling them off" isn't possible unless she "lets go" very few people know they aren't part of her.

Theme? Don't really have a theme. The style of masks (and the cape) come from her and her partner being *way* too into RennFaire/SCA etc and spending way too much time playing at Zorro. The friend does the whole Zorro bit sometimes, complete with hat.

ps. the TK field & "grip" on "attached" items (plus the invulnerability) is why she feels free to ignore Edna Mode's "No capes!" rule.

Busiek's Flying Fox is a much different character, but she does exist. The odds are that nobody will notice the similarity; Astro City is relatively low-profile, and the Flying Fox has only appeared twice.

I think you'll be fine with the Gatsby.

Thing is, student "code names" get checked out thoroughly (in the story universe) for copyright violations and for conflicts.

And it's sort of recommended that you don't conflict with characters from our world when writing stories (to avoid having some lawyer say you gotta take it down)

Also, I'm a little vague on why she needs to have a cap to hide the ears if they're fake to begin with. It seems to me that it would be simpler to hide them in her pockets.

You need to read some of the Whateley stories.

It's a school for mutants, and other "special" kids. But it has to *look* normal some days (say when state school inspectors are there or some parents).

So she needs to look normal on those days. But since she's trying to fake having the ears and tail as part of her for her official record, they need to stay on.

There's another student in the official stories who is using some odd TK powers to fake being a devisor *and* fake being a ghost (she's enrolled as two students).

Oh yeah, I'd almost forgotten *why* the "Fox" bit started in the first place. She and her best friend (possibly boyfriend, but they aren't into that sort of thing yet) were into RennFaire and swahasbuckling things. And they both *really* like Zorro.

But Zorro is copyrighted up the wazoo. But it means "Fox" in Spanish. So...

And yes, they both had swords as part of their outfits. But she's mostly dropped hers as being kinda unnecessary with her powers.

Well, one of my characters (who has a lot in common with my "Baraka" character from the late CAoL game) get their abilities by attempting a rather involved suicide in the "wrong" place.

And that character is related to Flying Fox.

said character has an extraordinarily evil sense of humor (doesn't help that the female form is about 12 and the male form is 18 or more)

Which is why when FF and her boyfriend and this other character arrive at Poe cottage, said character will be in female mode and wearing a dress (and hairstyle) that makes her look like Lewis Carroll's "Alice".

Imagine the fun when she introduces herself as "Allison Sutherland".

The male form is Donald "no relation" Sutherland.
