This TV news story aired in Spokane, WA the other day.

I see the place hasn't changed much in the last 40 years.

Yep, I see very well. *sigh* I wish I could say the response here would be different, but I'm not sure how much it would be.

A friend who grew up in Portland, but wound up working in Spokane for several years decribed it rather aptly.

"It's the biggest 'small town' I've ever seen"

The downtown "business district" was *still* (10 years ago) about 4 blocks wide and maybe a dozen long. And much of that was pretty small buildings. With the exception of a couple of department stores and a couple of hotels, I've seen as big a buildings in those satellite "business complexes" that Portland has springing up all over the suburbs.

And most of the buildings are *old*.

It's essentially one *huge* suburb. And it used to be the third largeet city in Washington. Don't know if it still is.

<sarcasm> *sob* Now I'm all homesick for Tennessee. ... because t3h 3v0l that is t3h qu33r, of course, recruits starting around third, fourth grade. </sarcasm>

And hey, *I* got hassled for "sitting like a girl", liking to play with the girls, and crying easily (among other "not manly" things) starting in first grade.
