Phhht! And here I thought they'd finally invented a printer that prints objects. Order a can of beans online, download it to your computer, print it up on your 3D printer, open your new can of beans, cook the beans, enjoy the beans.

This is a step on the way to that sort of "general purpose fabrication unit (aka "faber")

You can build finished plastic parts with it though.

One semi-silly thing you could do with it would be make a seamless plastic chain. :-)

"Overclocked" by Cory Doctorow has a story in it about what might happen if just such a faber were invented. It's pretty interesting. It doesn't seem to make food or anything alive, but it makes products like electronics.
