Ok, call me heartless...
Aug. 23rd, 2007 11:14 pm... but I'm getting rather upset at the families of those miners on the news.
They don't seem to grasp the idea that the efforts have been stopped because:
A. It's really, *really* unlikely anuyone is still alive down there
B. There's no way to get to the bodies without the virtual *certainty* of killing a lot more rescuers.
I'm sorry for their loss. But there's a point where you *have* to quit trying because you are going to be killing rescue personnel to retrieve dead bodies.
I fear this is yet another case of the spreading meme that what we *want* should override realistic assessments of risks.

Date: 2007-08-24 05:09 pm (UTC)The one that got me was the cover of the Village Voice the week I was back for Liam's memorial. It was a shot from across the river, with the bridge to the left...and a hand holding up a photo of the Towers shot from the same vantage point. The caption simply read "Wish You Were Here." I meant to bring a copy back with me, and forgot.

Sometimes even Barbecued!
(ask me to recit the above sometime, there are aspects that don't lend themselves to print.

oh wait, no. you're right.
I wish things could have worked out so that they could have found their bodies, or in some other way that the people didn't get worked up with so much hope, but that's just not the way it happened. I feel most badly for the rescuers who died subsequently.
