Why writers need to know how to spell

I was reading a bit of erotica online. Fairly well written gay erotica.
Except I hit this one word that *couldn't* be what the writer intended. Obviously, he'd relied on the spellchecker to correct his guess at the spelling. Alas, it had gotten the wrong word.
Finally, after the third occurrence, I was able to figure out that the word he wanted was "ministrations".
Alas, what the spellchecker had given him was "menstruations".
