This and that

A while back I'd loaned my friend Kathy one of my Netgear wireless cards for her laptop. At the time, Netgear didn't have an XP certified driver for the card. And I wasn't aware the XP didn't like the WAP we were using to test with anyway (I learned that when I got this laptop).
More recently, she got interested again. I'd loaned her a spare wireless router I had. And Saturday I tried to help her get things working over the phone. didn't get very far.
Sunday evening, she dropped by with her laptop and the card. But not the router.
I had turned on the Aironet WAP I use these days when I need one and had checked that things were working.
When she got here, the card she had just could *not* see the WAP. So, on a hunch, I swapped it with the card I'd been using in my old laptop. Boing! Connected.
showed her how to set the workgroup name for Windows networking. And when she restarted, she could see my systems. Tried connecting to the 200 gig HD hooked to this system so I could show her some videos, but her system is seriously low on RAM (256 meg), so it wouldn't.
When she got home, things didn't work as well. Apparently the router has older firmware than the docs I'd downloaded from the net. so the menu screens didn't match. We did get it reset to factory defaults though.
Only a few minutes after we gave up, she called back and said it'd started working. Go figure.
Meanwhile, I was wondering about the card she'd had. I checked and the firmware was up to date. It didn't what to work in this system, I dug out the old laptop. And after I "uninstalled" the entry in NetworkProperties for the old card, it started working just fine.
So since the battery on the old unit needed charging anyway, I started a remote backup of the drive. Which led to a lot of back and forth due to some programs and IE bookmarks that had characters in their names that aren't transferrable over a network link (mostly copyright and registered trademark signs) Once I got those fixed the backup completed ok.
Meanwhile, I'm trying to spend more time writing my stories. I seem to be doing better. If I can finish the top three in a somewhat timely manner, I may be able to consider writing something that is *sellable*. As it is, even the stuff folks like isn't likely to be publishable even in the porn/erotica trade. :-(
