kengrThursday, while dealing with some paperwork with the apartment manager I gritched about not being able to have an air conditioner (which, btw, I could swear I've gritched about before). She goes "Huh? Sure you can...."
Seems that (like many another thing) that lease restriction was removed at some point in the past, but they never bothered to *tell* me about it. Grrr.
If I buy one, I'll have to have the apartment maintenance guy put it in, and he'll have to take it out again when it starts getting colder.
I can live with that. I just wish I'd known this *last* year. Or better yet, whenever they changed the rules...
Last night I was checking out at the self-serve checkstand at Albertsons at about 10 to Midnight when I overheard one of the checkers asking the manager if the Harry Potter books would be put out at midnight. Seems there was a customer who'd called and asked earlier in the day and been told "yes" who was there to get hers.
I chimed in with "Gee, if you're going to put them out, I'll wait until midnight." :-)
After the manager said yes, I was waiting and then the checker asked if I was on their waiting list. I regretfully said "no" and went home.
this afternoon, I went over to Kathy's to help a bit with cleaning out her computer room. We got a couple of boxes of I stuff I wanted (or at least wanted to go thru at my leisure) and hauled them off to my storage.
And I took few things home. Several items are going to Freecycle, I already put those up. I know there will be more later.
A bit ago, I decided to go to the store again, And first thing I saw on entering the door? Stacks of the new Harry Potter book. :-)
So I shall be busy reading later....

Date: 2005-07-18 04:20 am (UTC)Asking something that may have already been answered sufficiently (in the mind of the person being asked) is "confrontational". Asking about doing something that's "against policy" may be.
Basically, the "rule" is "if they might get upset....". At a very deep level "upset person" is linked to "going to *hurt* me, badly" (emotionally or physically) At least if the upset is "connected with" me. And even if it isn't, it still kicks in the "fight/flight" reflex (or in my case, more "run/hide" reflex.
Given this, *and* the possible consequences of failure to get permission (evicted) I don't *do* the "easier to get forgiveness" except in cases where the odds of getting caught are *really* low.
What's that? Why yes, I *am* scared of way too much... :-(

although failure to remove an air conditioner from a window in the wintertime is not really very likely to get you evicted - more likely, they'll either just say "well, take it down now", or possibly even "it's so close to spring, you might as well just leave it, this year". every municipality's laws are different, but there are limits to what they can evict you for.)
Section 8 housing. The limits are a lot broader and "failure to comply with rules" is one of them. Consider that one of the other restrictions that used to be in effect was "no alcohol on premises". And it was an eviction offense.
