This is a widely seen but rarely commented on phenomenon.
Basically, a lot of people just cannot grasp the idea that other people are *different* than they are. That some people's minds don't work the way theirs do.
And in many cases, they come to believe that these other people are *deliberately* being contrary. Not that they are "really* different, but that they are acting differently with malicious intent.
This isn't just about gender, a lot of political, social, and religious rifts are due to this lack of understanding that people can act differently, or believe differently without having to be inherently wrong.
