improper mindset
Dec. 26th, 2022 05:14 pmI was reading a news story about the organic chemistry prof who got dismissed after student complaint of low grades in his class.
What put things in perspective for me was this quote from the petition:
“We are very concerned about our scores, and find that they are not an accurate reflection of the time and effort put into this class,”
This shows an all too common misunderstanding of how the world works.
"Time and effort" may be *necessary* for success, but they are not *sufficient*. All the time and effort in the world won't help if you aren't doing it right.
*Expecting* high scores because you put in lots of time and effort is ignoring the reality. Your scores depend on how well you learned the skills and information for the class. *Not* on how hard you worked.
You see this all over the place. What matters is the *results* not how hard you tried.
