Man of La Mancha vs Don Quixote
Oct. 15th, 2015 08:04 pmI've been listening to a lot of my MP3 files lately (mostly making sure they still play thru the BluRay player, not all of them do).
Anyway, I just finished listening to the complete play "Man of La Mancha" as permored in London many years back. And I'm now listening to the soundtrack album (just the music) from the original Brodaway cast.
It occurs to me that Cervantes must be spinning in his grave.
By all accounts, Don Quixote was intended to poke fun at the whole *concept* of knight errantry. And Quixote was not supposed to be any sort of heroic figure. Just a deluded man.
Compare that with Man of La Macha. It it Quixote is a noble figure, maybe a bit deluded, still with a noble purpose.
In other words, pretty much the opposite of Cervantes book.
