Ancient history
Mar. 31st, 2014 01:53 amOr at least that's what it feels like.
I got given a system a few weeks back that was better than what I'm currently using as my main box.
As part of the process of switching over to it, I've had to mess with the various programs/apps that attempt to synchronize my browser instance between the various boxes I use.
First thing I discovered was why Firefox's synch wasn't working. Apparently it gets upset at sharing the bookmarks with Xmarks. Ok, that was fine, I just told FF Sync to not bother with the bookmarks. Xmarks does a good job without some of the weirdness FF Sync has.
But I had a couple of boxes that were sufficiently out of synch with each other that I finally gave up and exported their bookmarks to a file and copied that over to the current main box and started comparing things to find what was different. A bit of a pain, but I've recovered a few bookmarks I'd accidentally deleted/misplaced over the years.
But in the process, I had to look at the main FF bookmarks list. I'd been mostly using the bookmarks toolbar ever since it got introduced, so I was confronted with *ancient* bookmarks Also, on the new-to-me box, most of the bookmarks don't have icons until I visit them.
So betwen the two, I'm visting all the bookmarks.
This has resulted in finding a lot of dead sites (including some where I recognized it and am sorry I hadn't grabbed useful info off them) and a lot of cases where I have *no* idea what it was or why I bookmarked it.
Digital archeology. Such fun...
