Please research things
Oct. 27th, 2013 04:02 pmReading an ok bit of online fic, but the author is grossly ignorant about a couple of things and they really jarred.
The first one was when a character is discussing future history and talks about taxing churches. And another character is wondering why it wasn't done in our time. Comments about "unfairness" are made.
Obviously he was asleep in social studies and history.
The reason that churches are tax exempt is historical. They *were* taxed back in England (and other countries). And the taxes were used as a way to control things. Especially to surpress churches the government disapproved of.
Anybody care to bet what sort of taxes a mosque or a pagan church would get hit with in the South if taxing them *was* legal?
The other bit was ending drug abuse by coming up with a "drug" that made the illegal drugs not affect people.
Great sounding idea. But a real horror in practice. Anything that would "immunize" you against herion would also immunize you against all "opiate" drugs, and likely codeine and the like as well. There go 90% of the best pain killers. And taking out cocaine will take out a lot of the rest *and* many anesthetics (for just one example, novocaine is a cocaine derivative).
The actual solution to the "drug" problem" is going to require changing *people*.
