.. had to shut down Thrale tonight. I'd finally gotteb annoyed enough at the out of memory errors. So I shut it down, opened it up, and swapped out the old RAM for the newr RAM I picked up a few months back when I had some extra cash.
Thrale and Ploor are a couple of Gateway boxes I picked up at Stuff a few years back. Almost identical cases, and identical hardware, other than hard drives. Ploor had a power supply die a while due to a bad drive. I was using it to copy some files from drives from older systems. Alas, one of the drives turned out to have a short across the power leads and that killed the power supply.
Anyway, they both use oddball RAM. RIMM instead of DIMM. It was supposed to be better but was never popular. So it was scarce and exprensive. I lucked out while doing some searches and found an outfit that specialized in supplying it. I got 2 gig (each) of RAM for what I'd paid a few years before for the *one* gig of RAM Maybe less.
When I got the stuff, I didn't want to shut down Thrale (which had been running for something like six months then) because of various things that were open. Since I had to replace the Power supply in Ploor, I used it to test *both* setts of RIMMs before it was too late to return them. I saved the "best" set for Thrale. Same brand, type and all 4 were ECC RAM. Ploor got two pairs the RIMMs inside the pairs were the same, but the pairs were different. Close enough specs though.
Well, I shut down Thrale, pulled it out and cleaned some dust from the bottom of the case. Swapped the RIMMs and reassaembled things.
Only problem after rebooting was that Firefox didn't restore the previous session properly. Took me a while to get previously open tabs back (thank god for Xmarks!).
Running nicely now. But it's still sad to have had to reboot a Windows box that'd gone that many months up and ruinning.
Probably have to open both of them in a week or 4. Need to put SATA cards in both of them to run some external drives faster. And eventually allow adding internal SATA drives. But that's a ways off yet.
