Urge to kill
Jan. 11th, 2012 09:34 pmI was hoping the RAM from my dead laptop would work in the new-to-me laptop I'd been givem. No such luck. Also, the HD in it is the same size as the onein the "new" one, so that's a wash too.
At least the RAM is available online for $18/ea. So $36 plus shipping will get the RAM maxed out. ENU *might* have some RAM that'll work. Have to see.
It wasn't a total waste dropping by the storage locker after the doctor's appointment to dig out the dead laptop. I can use the case. Also, it had some cables and stuff. Best of all, it had a PCMCIA wireless card I'd been using with the dead laptop.
I've spent a couple hours dealing with that. Among other things, I had to find the install disk.
Then came the real fun. It would not connect to my wifi. It could see it, but wouldn't connect. I knew the WEP128 key was right, because I'd entered it when I used the USB wifi adapter (didn't want to waste the USB connection, and it was USB 1.1 anyway).
I even went so far as to type all 26 hex digits into a text file and use cut and paste.
What finally worked?
Well the connection "settings" stuff for Window and for the utility for the card both had two items you picked from a pull down list. The USB one's equivalent utility had them done differently. For example, it had WEP and WEP-128 as choices, and there were (as I recall) three boxes.
Anyway, what I'd had the boxes set to:
[Open]
[WEP]
What did I finally try on a "it *can't* be that!" desperation move?
[Shared]
[WEP]
I may or may not bother digging into the help files (which were no help) but I'm thinking that this is a case of incredibly *stupid* programmer. I suspect that "open" means "no password". In which case the other box should have been grayed out.
I also suspect that something similar is why Fay's laptop can't connect to my wifi. We'll see next time she's over.
