Thanksgiving
Nov. 22nd, 2011 08:35 pmEarlier tonight
fayanora & I picked up pretty much the last item for Thanksgiving dinner.
Early in the month we picked up all the stuff that would keep well. Stuffing mix, some dips, cranbeery jiuce cocktail ("low cal"), some diet and regular lemon lime soda, etc. Also butter & margarine. Possibly other stuff I forgot)
Monday we got the veggies for the relish tray and one package of premade gravy (just in case) Fay got several gravy mixes on the initial run, but I figured it was best to have something I knew would work ok.
Anyway, today was the pies, the turkey, and some rolls. I'll get a different kind of rolls at the Albertsons next door tomorrow.
I already had a *lot* of potatoes, including a small bag of yukon gold potatoes. Which just happened to be what a recipe for made from scratch mashed potatoes recommended.
I made a trial batch over the weekend to see how it went. Not bad. And much easier than I'd expected.
Also nice because between the rest of the yukon golds and some russetts, etc I've got, I can make several batches if we can eat that much.
Oh yes, the turkey? After the last couple times dealing with a big *frozen* turkey, I bought a fresh turkey this time.
Gonna be fun getting Fay up and over here to help with the cooking on Thursday. Since I bought most of the food, Fay gets to do the "fun" stuff like peeling the spuds. :-)
Menu (more or less)
"Punch" (cranberry cocktail & lemon-lime soda, mixed to taste)
relish tray: olives, baby carrots, broccoli, grape tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, cheddar cheese, and pepper jack cheese with ranch dip (for me) & ranch dressing (for Fay)
rolls & butter
green beans
mashed potatoes & gravy
Turkey
stuffing (two kinds)
pumpkin pie (with Cool Whip)
dutch apple pie
Since she's never seen it, I'm inflicting "Alice's Restaurant" on Fay. It's yet another major source of cultural memmes and references that she should know (the 8x10 glossies with descriptions on the back, "i wanna kill!", Group W, etc)
Got lots of other movies and old TV shows in the viewing queue too.
