Thirty-nine years ago, at 1:20 am EDT, on June 28, 1969 New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn. A "gay bar" in Greenwhich Village, it was frequented by Black and Hispanic gay men. And a large portion of the customers were transgendered or drag queens.

Gays had been trying to organize to get rights for some time. But for some reason, this raid touched a nerve. And the patrons started fighting back.

The result was several days of riots and a major upswing in organizing for gay rights.

Oddly, even though most Gay Pride celebrations are in June or July to commemorate the Stonewall Riots, far too many Gay Rights groups still seem to prefer to ignore the fact that it wasn't the white boys , much less the "normal looking" GLBT folks that fought back. No it was the trannies , and draq queens. Probably helped along by a bunch of leathermen....

Check out the Wiki article on the riots for more info and links to a lot of background.
