Got up from the computer an hour or so ago. Just for a minute.
Came back and the screen was black. Power light was still on though..
So I wiggled the mouse just in case it'd gotten left on the system that has a power saver time-out. Nope.
So I braced myself and turned it off and back on.
And confirmed my fears. My second NEC MultiSync LCD 18010 has failed just like the first one (I bought the pair used).
At power up, the backlighting works for a few seconds then turns off.
That at least let me drag stuff to the Monitor/TV (with great difficulty) so I could shut things down properly. Or sort of properly.
After the system was down, it was drag it out from under the desk, and disconnect the video cable for the second monitor (the monitor/TV) Then I had to clear stuff so I could get at the back of the KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switchbox.
I got that unscrewed and then realized it'd have been much easier to disconnect that cable at the back of the bad monitor and swap it to the Monitor/TV. Arrgghhh.
Since I had the coimputer pulled out from under the desk, I took the opportunity to open it up and fix a couple of minor problem (disconnected power cable for the Jaz drive and an improperly connected cable for the internal speaker)
So now I can use the Jaz drive again (which will let me finish getting old data off of the Jaz disks and let mre use them for the occasional "need to keep this data, but it changes " situation.
And with the speaker hooked up properly, I now get the beeps when I hit one of the "lock" keys (I'm always accidentally hitting caps lock and not noticed until I have a bunch of text I have to correct the case on).
Anyway, this means I need to make a trip to the storage locker soon so I can unbury one of the big CRTs that I kept for emergencies. I don't trust the Monitor TV too far because it has a problem. Fortunately, it's much easier to live with a monitor that goes right white when you change modes or hit power off. Obviously a similar failure to the NEC units, just backwards.
I just plugged it into a power strip so I can kill the power .
Anyway, the amount of gear I *gotta* get fixed or replaced is mounting....
And the easy to sel stuff is getting thinner. Hence the title.
pss. I suspect the two NEC monitors are a relatively easy fixif you know how. But whether it is a *cheap* fix... *sigh*
