Ask the Alien Overlord

This group of questions involve human biology and mating rituals.
Dear Overlord.
It's just not right. All these queers are trying to demean marriage. And Congress won't do anything about it. You can override them. It's just not right to have men marrying men and women women marrying women. It's against God's Will!

We are being oppressed! We are being forced to have only one wife per man. this is against our faith!
The Overlord has received many petitions regarding this "marriage" and various views on it. The Overlord reviewed them carefully. This took several minutes due to the large body of religious and legal materiel covering the subject.
The Overlord decrees that indeed marriages should not be in violation of religious law. But since your civil law and history clearly show that civil and religious law are to be separate, the Overlord also decrees that no civil authority may perform marriages nor have laws pertaining to such. Perhaps this "civil union" some segments of your sub-units of government have can be substituted for it in legal matters.
The Overlord has also received a number of petitions dealing with matters that after much study, seem to deal with human sexuality ("queers", "faggots", dykes") and human biology ("shemale", "freak man-woman") and matters relating to human society's gender roles. Most of the study was required because of the way many petitioners confused these categories.
The Overlord has found that many of these categories involve false-to-fact assumptions. Therefore, the Overlord has been forced to impose certain rules:
Henceforth, all records will have separate categories for "sex" and "gender". For historical records or other records where it is not possible to determine the true values, "presumed gender" will be used and be a separate category from "gender".
"Sex" will be purely biological/medical based (anatomy and where necessary, genetics). And will have *at a minimum* the following sub categories:
It is strongly recommend but not (yet) mandatory that the "other" category be expanded. This will be left to humans, to be reviewed by the Overlord at a future date.
It is also forbidden to surgically alter sex without permission of the patient. Any doctor doing so will be subject to whatever mutilatiion the Overlord determines to be appropriate and equivalent. Surgery to repair or increase *function* is permissible. But had best not be used as an excuse to make someone "conform" to some mythical norm.
Gender will be based on behavior and appearance. At a minimum the categories will be:
Again, the Overlord recommends expanding the "other" category and will review the situation at some future date.
As for this "sexual orientation", the Overlord sees no reason that organizations should maintain records of it, nor given the variety of sexes and genders your species exhibits does the Overlord see any rational means of *accurately* recording it in a simple system.
It is further ordered that no discrimination be allowed based on sex or gender. Sexual Orientation can only be used as a criterion for matters involving actual sexual behavior, such as hiring sex workers.
Due to the difficulty in dealing with poorly set up record systems while investigating matters for this decision, it is ordered that all databases henceforth have an "other" category for all fields that are multiple choice and an explicit unknown or "no data available" for all fields.
Certain particularly badly set up databases have resulted in the humans responsible being sent off as involuntary sex workers to the insectoids of Rigel VII.
We also encountered some difficulties with both religious and political figures when investigating the "marriage" question and the sex/gender/orientation questions. It was determined that their public pronouncements were not their actual views, nor were their avowed reason for wishing laws continued or created their actual ones.
We have allowed humans self-government subject to such limits as we set. This sort of behavior interferes with it and wastes our time straightening out the resulting messes. Therefore, we serve notice that anyone found to be dishonest about why they are for or against a law or proposed law will be conditoned to tell the truth for a period of one year for each offense.
