Hassles and joys

The router I got for Kathy has been acting up since about the third day she had it (Don't buy the cheap Linksys units. there's a *reason* why they are cheap).

I had a spare Routefinder that I hoped I could get working for her. And today we were both free. Also, the copy of the new Harry Potter that I'd had her order from Amazon for me had arrived.

When I got there, the router fired right up. And her laptop worked just fine with it. But the desktop system was having problems.,

So, I reinstalled Windows. Of course, this took a while, during which I read the book. :-)

After the usual waiting and reboots, everything was fine...

Except for one *minor* detail. The Ethernet card was recognized, and the drivers were there. But WINIPCFG didn't see it. Neither did anything else I tried. So, after wasting a couple of hours fighting it, I said I'd buy dinner and we walked over to the Chinese restaurant a couple of blocks away.

The leftovers are sitting in my fridge as I type this. :-)

I tried a couple more things after dinner, but Windows is still not co-operating.

So, I came home. I'll have to go back again some other time, with lots of diagnostics and stuff.

Oh yes, no sooner had I walked in the door then I got a call from some friends. D&D at their place tomorrow afternoon. Ought to be *real* interesting, as their kids will be in the game. I think they are going to learn the truth of the old saw, the hard way....
