Idea. Snow Squid (or maybe Snow Kraken?). Squid that live in snow and swim thru it. The deeper the snow, the bigger the squid.

There you are travelling peacefully and suddenly tentacles erupt from the snow!

We used to claim if you tripped while cross-country skiing or snow showing, it was because snow snakes grabbed your ankles. Snow squids would be even better.

Ooh! Maybe some are malevolent, but others are decidedly friendly? Kiddos playing in the snow and suddenly ooh, hi friend! Mom and Dad are never gonna believe this!
