this and that

A while back, something had reminded me of the old movie Repo Man. And when I asked if she'd ever seen it, Fay had said no.
It sort of slipped my mind for a while, but I tracked down a copy. Didn't remember it when Fay came over Monday for our regular TV night.
But as we were shutting things down, I remembered it. I showed her the first few minutes (the traffic stop scene). She was hooked. It'll be first up on our TV night this Friday.
I had some good computer stuff Tuesday. A local computer store is going out of business. Sad, because I *like* being able to actually look things over before buying and not have to deal with shipping.
But they are selling off remaining stock and significant markdowns.
Alas, several things I wanted were already out of stock since I'd checked Monday night. But several others were still available. So off I went.
I just missed a bus and had to sit around in the heat waiting for thee next one. So I walked the long block to where my geocache is located. As I'd feared, it wasn't there. I'll have to replace it in a day or three. Though I really need to make some changes so it doesn't keep disappearing.
Walked back to bus stop, and managed to survive until bus showed. Rode it to the Parkrose TC, then transferred to the 73 and rode it to 122nd & Prescott.
Then came the no fun part of the trip. It's a fairly long walk (for me) from that stop to the computer store. At least this time I'd been smarter than last time and had a bottle of PowerAde Zero along.
Got to the store and picked up the stuff on hold for me. Considered the 19" widescreen monitor they had marked down to $25, but reluctantly decide to pass on it.
Then there was the even longer walk to the Bus stop by the Wendy's as I wanted to pick up some things I'd forgotten to get at Winco on the monthly run on the first.
Got those and headed back out into the heat. Even more bleah. Got home, had some dinner and crashed out for several hours.

Date: 2017-08-09 06:32 pm (UTC)I hereby nominate myself to take you Someplace, Some Time, that it makes more sense to Car. Out combined schedules permitting (and mine is about to get NUTS around the end of August, with an out-of-state trip STRAIGHT into the first week of School Job.)
But also, yay buses!

Date: 2017-08-09 07:58 pm (UTC)As for places to Go by Car, I can think of a few. Ikea, for example (but not until at least next month, need money)
Got any plans for the eclipse? Need to find some of the glasses, regardless, and if we could go someplace in the zone of totality...

Date: 2017-08-10 08:58 pm (UTC)So for the foreseeable future, camping is out, unless there's AC power or a car lighter jack available. :-(
Oh, I have a dome tent that Fay and I could probably fit in and some long, outdoor grade extension cords.
Waterfalls and beaches are ok though. :-)
Re: eclipse
Date: 2017-08-10 10:29 pm (UTC)It sounds like you ARE interested in an eclipse trip. Enough so that I should aim for a plan for S-and-me with enough flex in it to pick up some additional people, maybe? And NOT an overnight.
In the spirit of paying attention to necessary details, what distances, grades, and types of surface are you happy with, comfortable with, uncomfortable with, or unable to cope with for walking? At the moment I am capable of roughly a three-hour hike on any trail (not bushwhacking or climbing though) but that's very different from where I was last winter, when I was having trouble with one flight of stairs! In good weather and when I bring a book, I can cover about eight to ten miles on city streets in a walking day if I decide to devote the time to it, but not much more, so my effective limitations are more about the trail/road/beach surface and the total time - so long as I have slept, relaxed, eaten, and had water, coffee, and meds beforehand and not worked myself up into a panic getting ready - but if I run out of sensory processing energy or peopling energy, especially if I haven't eaten or slept, I go monosyllabic and have trouble walking AT ALL because I can't tell which direction is forward. My rule of thumb for trips for myself and S is that we bring water, we pack along food, and we go someplace where a restroom stop at the beginning and end of outdoor activity is feasible. Generally there is enough space and soothing nature-y things outdoors that I don't do an Overwhelm. Generally.

Interested, but the more I here on the news, the more it sounds like it'd be a *zoo* anywhere in the zone of totality.
Madras (pop 6000) is expecting 100,000 visitors, for example. and there's talk of major gridlock on the roads.

Since my bike was stolen (2(?) years ago come November) I've not been getting a lot of exercise.
It's less than a quarter mile from the bus stop to that computer store, and I had to stop on the way back.
I am *seriously* out of shape. But I'd like to work on getting better.
Surfaces aren't too much of an issue. Dirt, pavement, grass, whatever. Slippery is bad, but not too bad (I've got walking sticks).
Stairs are better than steep slopes. If a ramp will work for a wheelchair, it'll be fine for me.
BTW, I carry that cane in case I need it, not because I can't get around without it.
If I need it and don't have it, it's a matter of things hurting, not of my not being able to walk.
And as I said, it's more being out of shape than "crippled".

Remember, I've got a GPS. And carry spare batteries. :-)

Yeah, I carry water *and* gatorade as well as a selection of granola/energy/meal bars.
I've got a couple of semi insulated water bottles with shoulder straps and a "camelback" type pack (only holds a liter or so of water, but also has room for carrying other supplies.
I also have (and should carry for something like this) a small zipper bag with various OTC meds, bandaids and a few other things.
Restrooms are good. I tend to need to pee frequently, and I can't just whip it out behind a tree anymore (gotta buy one of those "stand to pee" gizmos from a Womyn's bookstore one of these days)
Oh yeah, I've got 2 FRS radios we can use (Fay has my other two, but I'm not sure she knows where they are). Useful if we want to split up for some reason, or if there isn't cell coverage and we need help.

Date: 2017-08-10 06:04 am (UTC)Yeah, it's inconvenient if you take the bus (especially after that fence along the railroad right of way went up) but for someone with a car it's no big deal.
What killed them was Amazon and the like. If you aren't a big box store, it's getting hard to survive.
