Ok, we had a power outage today. That caused several problems.

The Win 7 box stayed up because it is plugged into the UPS, but one of the two external drives I was running compare & updates on wasn't. So that snookered that. Later when I tried to get it going, the drive hooked up to an ESATA port wasn't recognized (not unexpected).
Alas, the usual workaround (involves using admin tools in control panel) couldn't be done because one of the things the failing drive did was cause Windows to forget where to find those files. *sigh*

Before I did more than glance at the situation, my downstairs neighbor had come up because she couldn't any cable channels after the power came back on.

After trying various things, I decided that the cable box was fried (or it may just have been the power supply). So while I tried to see if her TV could pick anything up hooked directly to the cable outlet she called Comcast to see about getting a replacement.

The cable box was old and was connected to the TV via coax, so it'd really needed replacing since she'd gotten the TV set last year. But she'd never managed to remember it when I was available to go with her.

They were ok with having me go in to make the exchange for her (she didn't want to drive, can't really blame her). I think I spent more time in the waiting room waiting for a free agent than I did on the bus (both ways!)

Anyway, got the new box connected and set up and left her very happy. It'll cost her an extra $10 a month for the HD service, but if she decides to drop it, the new box will still give her a better picture than the old one did. :-)

Getting back upstairs to deal with my stuff, I discovered that the power supply for my ancient Linksys Network Storage Link had died. That's odd because I was plugged into a *good* surge protector strip.

I dug thru my box of leftover power supplies from various dead gear and found one that'd work. Alas, even though the USB drive plugged into it will power up, something's wrong with it. So there's a bunch of files I can't get at (it's EXT2 formatted, so I don't have anything else that'll read it).

I've got backups but they were one of the things I was updating. *sigh*

I not only need a new 300+ gig SATA to get the win 7 box going again, I need a 300W or better ATX power supply to try getting the currently non working Dell sitting next to the system I'm typing this on going again.

The DELL (a Dimension 5100) has both SATA and ATA slots. A pair of 80 gig SATA drives. And has 4 meg of RAM (which makes a *big* difference from this box's 2 gig).

I also can't move any of the files from the working file server to Bluray M-discs to free up space until the Win 7 box is usable again.
