For several years I've been dealing with a frustrating problem.

Attachments (other than really tiny ones) to my emails wouldn't go thru. I'd get errors from the server.

Likewise, FTPing files to my web host got errors. I knew both had worked in the past, but wasn't sure what the problem was.

I *did* discover (by accident) that I could do them from my laptop, but only using wifi, not when there was a cable plugged into the ethernet port

At one point I thought it was the switch in the living room, but swapping that out (thanks to the guy who hosts my domain having a spare switch he let me have) didn't change things.

A week or so back, Fay was over visiting and at one point her laptop somehow got assigned the IP address of the media server, causing all *sorts* of fun.

I realized that what with various systems having gotten replaced, most of the computers were getting assigning dynamic IP saddresses by the router. I prefer to have fixed IP addresses, but I'd not put any real effort into oit since my old Routefinder router died. I'm on my 4th router since them.

But that confusion was the last straw. So I sat down and made sure my table of MAC addresses for the various computers and adapters was up to date. Then I sat down and assigned IP addresses to each MAC address. That required entering them one at a time in the router config (why, oh why don't they have a simple way to upload a list to routers for this?)

Ok, I got it done and figured that problem was gone.

Today I got to wondering. The "dynamic" addresses were in the range reserved for "guests" in the router config. The fixed IP addresses weren't. And I think the PCMCIA wifi card was one of the few MAC addresses that I'd gotten around to assigning a fixed IP address to when I set up the router You don't suppose?

So I dug out a *huge* file (a 3 meg animated GIF) and attached it to a test message to a friend. Amd it sent just fine.

I'll have to set up FTP on this box to test that, but I rather suspect that it'll work just fine too.

Pardon me while I beat my head on the desk...
