I hate windows
Feb. 28th, 2011 10:37 pmHad my main box lock up (weird one, I was loading a youtube video and the screen went black with all the drive activity lights on steady. And no response from the numlock and capslock keys. Not good.
So I rebooted.
Windows got mostly loaded (the progress bar fopr "loading Windows" that comes up before you get the Windows logo screen had mostly completed.) And then gave me a "Loader Error 3"
Some checking on the net suggested several possibilities, none of which worked.
I've currently got the main drive stuck in a mobile rack in my tertiary system. Chkdsk is running and may complete in the not too distant future. A few hours at most, I hope.
At that point, I'll update the backup of the mail directory to the usbserver and be able to use email again. Some other files will need uopdating as well.
But since Partition magic reported an error with the parition definition on the backup drive from the primary box (I suspect one of the fix attempts mangled to boot record just enough to make both drives a problem), after a medical appoiintment tomorrow, I'm dropping by ENU and getting a new drive to backup the main drive up onto.
Then I'll use Beyond Compare to try to synch any files that are out of date on the original backup. Once that's done, I can reformat the original drive and reinstall everything on it. I may take the chance to upgrade from Win2k Pro to WinXP Pro. I need to do that eventually, anyway.
So unless things go seriously wrong, I'll have a slightly bigger backup drive (good thing as my default backups don't erase files that have been removed from the source drive unless I do a manual backup with that option on). And a spare drive to use in one of the other systems.
Since I had the box open anyway, I fixed a couple of minor problems. I flipped a case fan that'd I'd installed backwards. And I added a powerr cable to supply the extra power the USB/Firewire board needed. I may replace the floppy drive as well since it seems to be hosed.
But for now, I'm having to use Thrale (secondary Windows box) while I wait to deal with Eddore (primary Windoze box). Ploor (tertiary) is chugging away on the chkdsk.
